    Most of them sell “website subscriptions”

    Most e-commerce platforms today sell website subscriptions: pay monthly, pick a template, build a site. But sellers who are just starting out don't have the people or the time to build and run a website, so they never use it.

    Many platforms take a cut of every sale: marketplaces take 10% or 15% of each order, and shop platforms commonly charge 1–5%. The better business gets, the more goes to them.
